Comparing LED High Bay with Metal Halide High Bay

Over the last few years, the traditional highbay light has seen a large transformation. The good old days of High Intensity Discharge (HID) or T5 highbays has given way to the new LED products that are far more energy efficient.
LED Long High Bay
With new LED technology, light illumination is created by the constant movement of electrons in a semiconductor material. The heat LEDs produce is quickly absorbed into a heat sink giving it a high source efficiency
Metal Halide High Bay
In the old Metal Halide construction, light is produced by passing an electric arc through a gaseous mixture of vaporized mercury and metal halides chemical compound. The inefficient ballast and unfavorable operating temperature make the source efficiency low

Directionality

Usually, it is more important to emit light onto a specific target area rather than to all directions (360 degrees) around the bulb. As such the ability to direct light to a certain area is important.
LED Long High Bay
The unidirectional characteristics of LED lights transmit light only within a 120 degree direction. It can direct most of the light produced at the source to where it is needed. Hence, its system efficiency can remain high.
Metal Halide High Bay
Metal Halide does not transmit the light to the target directly. It radiates out at a 320 degree angle from the source and relies on the fixture to direct it towards the target, resulting in substantial losses in usable light. The system efficiency is thus very low.

LED Metal Halide Equivalent

When replacing Metal Halide lamps with LED lamps, the equivalent sizes of lamps are as shown. This shows that a much smaller watt sized LED lamp can replace a larger metal halide lamp.

Lumen Depreciation

Lumen depreciation is the process in which the total output of lumens a fixture produces decreases during its lifetime. The rate at which a fixtures lumens depreciate can depend on a multitude of factors which include the type of lighting technology used, total hours used, and various other factors
LED Long High Bay
Typically, LED high bay gradually loses its brightness to 70% of its initial brightness after 50,000 operating hours.
Metal Halide High Bay
Whereas, Metal Halide quickly lose its brightness to 60% of its initial value after only 10,000 operating hours.

Metal Halide High Bay causes "white spots" due to it's inability to evenly spread out the light by just the use of reflector.
